10/07/2007: Posted by: Phil Rennett - Quiet Storm Consultants (01530 276550) Over 85 per cent of almost 150 installers surveyed felt they were being ‘ripped off’ by being charged for HDDs based on storage capability rather than the actual market value of the hardware. More than 60 per cent were also disappointed with the quality of the drives used in the DVRs. "Installers feel they are being charged unreasonably high prices for sub standard drives by DVR manufacturers focusing on recording capacity," says Acam MD Chris West. "The message they get is ‘never mind the quality, feel the width’ and that just isn’t acceptable." Acam has a HDD Honesty Policy which ensures prices for storage options are based on real world hardware costs and not capacity alone. The company distributes tailored Cathexis DVRs to the security market and uses Seagate SV35 surveillance drives in each recording solution. "SV35’s are designed to run 24/7 and have a five-year manufacturer’s warranty," says Chris. "A reliable, high quality storage capability has to be part of any good CCTV solution, but it doesn’t have to - and shouldn’t - come at an exhorbitant price. It’s a message that is being echoed by a growing number of installers and which should be heeded by more manufacturers." For further information, call Acam on 01332 382555. Back |
